Is Your Language Service Provider Exposing Your Business To Unnecessary Risk?

A typical translation project can pass through a substantial number of hands before it is returned to the buyer. Clients are often surprised to learn that a single multilingual project can be worked on by more than 50+ unique people, from the local language service provider to editors, proofreaders, subject matter experts (SME), project managers, and quality control.

Every person that works on a translation project plays an important role in ensuring its accuracy and consistency. Quality matters, which is why the language translation process has evolved to feature so many touchpoints in the translation chain. But what about the security of those documents?

Companies routinely outsource confidential information to Language Service Providers (LSPs) for translation. This includes highly sensitive IP and legal documents related to corporate transactions or ongoing litigation, for example, as well as contracts and agreements that are protected by non-disclosure and confidentiality clauses.

Why You Should Secure Your Supply Chain

Within a company’s four walls, sensitive corporate data and documents are fiercely protected from theft or breach, and for good reason. But what about when they leave that protected space? Cyber attacks on supply chains are among the fastest-growing security threats at present, with cyber security services firm BlueVoyant finding that 80% of organizations experienced a breach that originated from vulnerabilities in their vendor ecosystem in the 12 months leading up to its September 2021 report.

It is easy to see how this might happen within the translation workflow if the appropriate technical and procedural controls are not in place. LSPs offer access to a global network of native speakers who specialize in translation and localization, and many of those linguists are freelance contractors. Unfortunately, not every contractor is as diligent as they should be about security, nor is every LSP proactive about controlling information security in their translation process.

For example, are your Language Service Provider’s contractors working on your confidential legal documents from a cafe with an insecure WIFI? Are they using their personal email addresses or saving their work onto a personal device? Do you know what happens to your data once a project is complete?

If you do not know what your LSP is doing to keep your data and documents safe from hacking, theft, or loss, then now is the time to ask.

If your LSP can not demonstrate how it manages, moves, audits, or controls access to your content, then now is also the time to change provider.

Outsourcing Without The Risk

As a specialist in the translation of confidential, legal, and other highly sensitive corporate information, BIG IP & Legal Solutions has always prioritized data and document security.

Unlike other Language Service Providers, we built our translation process around security as the primary driver, not as an afterthought. That is why our entire translation approach and IT infrastructure is SOC 2 Type II audited and compliant with ISO 27001 standards for information security management. These are standards that cover not just the technology we use, but also our people, processes, and even how we train our staff.

All client content is locked down and fully auditable in our proprietary translation environment, LanguageVault®, which confines documents, restricts and monitors access, and protects and controls data as soon as it leaves your secure environment to enter ours.

We developed LanguageVault to meet the exacting processes demanded and audited by security experts and designed it as a secure and unified platform for our customers to manage their language needs. In other words, it gives greater oversight into the status of the translation process and safeguards all data and documents.

By working with BIG, you can benefit from the same high levels of service and quality as your current LSP, but with the added peace of mind that we will meet business and regulatory requirements for information security.
