Interpreter Training Assessment Program Ensures the Competency of Bilingual Staff
Growing Limited English Population Causes Increased Strain on Healthcare Quality
The limited English-speaking population is growing and is putting a greater demand on the delivery of quality healthcare services in the United States. Studies show that even when factors such as income and insurance status are accounted for, Non-English-speaking patients receive poorer quality care resulting in greater costs. Regulatory agencies and leading healthcare organizations have recognized the importance of comprehensive language access and diversity programs.
Bilingual staff account for 15-20% of a healthcare organization’s workforce and generally mirror the demographics of the communities they serve. Guaranteeing linguistic fluency in non-Native languages (including both English and the non-English language) ensures the proper delivery of healthcare services.
Many healthcare organizations require an independent 3rd party to validate linguistic competency when speaking in Non-native languages. In some instances, this may include the use of medical and healthcare terminology to be spoken in English, but often, it will require the authentication in the Non-English Language.
ISI Language Solutions has been validating and ensuring linguistic competency for over 36 years.
ISI’s Interpreter Training and Assessment Program (ITAP)
The ITAP (Interpreter Training Assessment Program) assesses healthcare terminology fluency for bilingual staff in their non-native language. This provides the linguistic validation and quality control mechanism necessary to ensure competent delivery of healthcare services in Non-native languages.
Available online, 24 hours a day, employees can simply log into ITAP with their credentials, and are given a window of time to complete the tests. We designed convenient access to minimize workflow interruption. Results are measured and compiled into a comprehensive report that showcases areas of strength and concern.
