On April 12, 2023, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) published a final rule revising translation and accessibility requirements for Medicare Advantage and Part D materials. The final rule mandates expanded availability of translated materials to members with limited English proficiency who request accommodation. Although full implementation of some of the requirements of this new ruling may not be in effect until early 2026, healthcare providers have been advised to be prepared to accommodate increased requests for translated materials, as well as faster direct-to-patient delivery of those materials, by January 1, 2024.
Because the final updated CMS rule requires plans to provide translated versions of required materials on a standing basis in languages spoken by at least 5% of individuals in a plan’s service area, many plans and providers are urgently seeking solutions to help them efficiently and quickly meet this increased need in a cost-effective way.
